In ways, yes. The building of stuff is similar to Minecraft, but there are more complex substructures like guns, missiles, etc There are similarities but very few. Its different because you can build far more complex ships. And its in no way blocky besides that. You can blow large holes in asteroids, and the collisions are very complex you can blow holes in, bend, break, and do other things to ships.

And it will have objective based gameplay in the future. So, yes, there will be a sort of survival or career mode in the future. Currently, it is more a Star Wars spaceship builder. You also have vehicle weapons, and pretty much any block can be damaged or destroyed by them. So if you build a ship and I shoot it in the middle long enough, it will break into two pieces that have their own trajectories and velocities.

So survival is one of the dominant elements as you can probably tell. The way that you choose to survive and what you put emphasis on will determine the way that your experience plays out. People are well-accustomed to making sure that they manage resources in Minecraft anyway, but this is on a whole new level which is quite interesting to see. Space Engineers is a great mod which offers a lot. How you survive and the choices that you make will all have a big impact on the type of experience you have.
